Assignment: Portfolio Photography "Bag of Tricks"
This assignment could be done between seventeen to twenty
two photographs.
Someone would have to be very good to do this work well with
less images.
Labeling is important to insure to both you, others and
myself you understand
the different aspects toward the mastery of craft in camera
operation.
Some images may carry several values-for example, one image
may represent
Overall and High Angle photographs. This is a
thinking and doing exercise.
DEADLINE: Friday Feb. 21, 2014. All images with caption/labels posted to your blog.
Labeling and or captioning is VERY important, so we both
know what the image represents to the following material.
Here is a listing of the images via
grouping or purpose; the number of images expected and a brief description of
the image purpose in context of learning composition.
1. Overall, medium and
close up. Try for images from the same
location or event.
Three photos: A sense of place, a "conversation"
distance, and a detail image.
2. Macro lens: if you got one, show me your closest shot of
something.
3. High angle and low angle.
Two images. "bird's eye
view, ant eye view". One could
combine an overall image with a high angle view, if it is a very nice photo.
4. Patterns, repetitions and lines. One VERY GOOD image or three images created
through the camera lens and camera position;
line work usually means catching something on the edge of the image and
have it move through the composition.
Remember the rules of thirds in the world, fore ground,
middle ground (focus) and background.
Lines move through these grounds.
5. Silhouette. Think
of the rule of thirds in the world. Five
stops of light "volume" between the focus area or middle ground and
the background. This could also be
applied to the fore ground to frame the middle ground.
6.Comparison/ contrast.
Two photos showing change. Usually
best done with an image of the same subject matter, but showing some change.
(Day and night, before and after.)
7.Environmental Portrait.
Usually eye contact with the photographer and a "telling"
photo-we learn something about the subject through props, clothing and
background.
8.Observational detail.
A "telling" detail.
Maybe a macro lens image could have both of these values if it
thoughtful.
9. "How to" pictures. At least three images up to eight images-
show us how something is done or how something works.
These three
images represent an understanding of light and camera stability and movement:
10. Freeze action (fast shutter);
11. Blur (slow shutter, camera
still and subject moving); and
12. Panning (slow shutter, camera moving with moving subject.)
These last two images can be accomplished with cameras with shutter and F-stop controls.
Maximum and minimum depth of field. Two images. Works best when the only difference between the two images is ONLY the change in F-stops and shutter speeds.
