Research paper resources AND INSTRUCTIONS

Monday May 5, 2014
Wrapping up our research papers.  This is the week of grace because of this, that, and the other.
If you are stuck,  Respond to these questions and you will home free.
What is the job/work?
Where would you perform this work?
What qualities do you have or can develop to pursue this career?
What education do you need for this career?
Why do you want to do this work for a career?

Post to your blog AND send to email as an email attachment:     ryssdesoto@gmail.com

Monday April 28, 2014
Good morning everyone!
As we head into the end of the year, we want to wrap up this research paper!

I expect everyone to have completed by Tuesday and write out THREE pages on a career you are interested in pursuing.  Discuss how your college choices (school, major) will help you achieve a career with the various demands and particularities of your interest.

I would like to see the last of the three pages of typewritten work to contain why you are interested in that particular career: what life events and experiences have shaped your interests.

For example:   I began my pursuit of photography when, during a photography class at Sam Rayburn High School, I saw my photograph develop in a tray of Dektol developer. Poof, under the red safelight, I witnessed "scientific magic" the chemical interactions causing an image to materialize on an otherwise black sheet of paper.

No cover page wanted.  Page 4 should list your sources of your paper research.

Wednesday April 16, 2014
As we begin to write our papers, it will be good to review what a proper paper looks like.
Thanks to Ms. Sasser for this outline.  Extra points to student group who will create audio track
for this video.  Rappers are welcome.

Tuesday April 15, 2014
 A few updates:
Once you get to task 4 and complete the Q and As, start on your research paper.
Not asking for topics of interest number 2 or 3.  I expect two pages from everyone
by the end of the week.  If class as A WHOLE makes progress, we will have a photography day.
Prepare to work on your HOW TO on Thursday.

Tuesday April 8, 2014
Today we used Google to enlarge our search for information about careers for
our research paper.  Using simple search terms such as "careers" in our subject of interest
resulted in LOTS of websites.

A basic skill is to identify the source of the website to insure good information.
So avoid the for profit schools.  Do work with sites associated with professional organizations;
member organizations; government institutions; professions with an education component to their website; and personal "testimonials" about their experience in finding work in a certain field or
work that is best suited to their talents, personal interests or moral convictions.
Monday April 9, 2014.    Library research day.  All students should have created a blog post Titled:
Draft research paper.  Here put the record of your research links, notes and outline.

Wednesday April, 9, 2014
Another day in the classroom, time sharing the computers.

Thursday April 10, 2014
Back to the library computer lab, everyone should have their new post Titled:
Draft research paper.   Here put the record of your research links, notes and outline.

Everyone should have blog post and have completed
TASK 2:TAKE THE CAREER CLUSTER SURVEY, with the results either posted in Draft Research Paper as screen shot of your results or typed if you cannot upload the screenshot.

State your subject for your research paper.

and the broad career clusters listed below.

Legal-crime scene investigators to court room.
Media-broadcast and publishing.
Art-exhibit and art work presentations.
Science- NASA and medicine.
Military-DARPA, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

This is additional information from Ms. Robinson.  Use this material to help you
make a topic selection.   Everyone should be able to copy and paste this information to your
own "work in progress" blog post.

Good morning folks!

I am sick today, so use this day to work on your portfolio.

We have a shortage of computers in the classroom.  Those with USB thumb drives may go to the library if the schedule at the library permits.  Permission slips are in the container on the teacher’s desk with the rulers.

1p, 2p, 5p Principals class.  Students will be working on their portfolio.  They have a list of images needed.  They are to label and post to their blog sites.

Announce to class:  I believe no one has done any of the “how to” set of images.
That part of the portfolio will now be done in small groups and will no longer be part of the current assignment.

Encourage the sub teacher to call me to get access to work on my computer.

See everyone Tuesday.  Get to work!

Assignment: Portfolio Photography "Bag of Tricks"

Assignment: Portfolio Photography "Bag of Tricks"

This assignment could be done between seventeen to twenty two photographs.

Someone would have to be very good to do this work well with less images.

Labeling is important to insure to both you, others and myself you understand

the different aspects toward the mastery of craft in camera operation.

Some images may carry several values-for example, one image may represent

Overall and High Angle photographs.  This is a  thinking and doing exercise.

DEADLINE: Friday Feb. 21, 2014.  All images with caption/labels posted to your blog.

Labeling and or captioning is VERY important, so we both know what the image represents to the following material.

Here is a listing of  the images via grouping or purpose; the number of images expected and a brief description of the image purpose in context of learning composition.

1.  Overall, medium and close up.  Try for images from the same location or event.

Three photos: A sense of place, a "conversation" distance, and a detail image.

2. Macro lens: if you got one, show me your closest shot of something.

3. High angle and low angle.  Two images.  "bird's eye view, ant eye view".  One could combine an overall image with a high angle view, if it is a very nice photo.

4. Patterns, repetitions and lines.  One VERY GOOD image or three images created through the camera lens and camera position;  line work usually means catching something on the edge of the image and have it move through the composition.

Remember the rules of thirds in the world, fore ground, middle ground (focus) and background.  Lines move through these grounds.

5. Silhouette.  Think of the rule of thirds in the world.  Five stops of light "volume" between the focus area or middle ground and the background.  This could also be applied to the fore ground to frame the middle ground.

6.Comparison/ contrast.  Two photos showing change.  Usually best done with an image of the same subject matter, but showing some change. (Day and night, before and after.)

7.Environmental Portrait.  Usually eye contact with the photographer and a "telling" photo-we learn something about the subject through props, clothing and background.

8.Observational detail.  A "telling" detail.  Maybe a macro lens image could have both of these values if it thoughtful.

9. "How to" pictures.  At least three images up to eight images- show us how something is done or how something works.

These three images represent an understanding of light and camera stability and movement:

10.  Freeze action (fast shutter);
11.   Blur (slow shutter, camera still and subject moving); and
12.  Panning (slow shutter, camera moving with moving subject.)

These last two images can be accomplished with cameras with shutter and F-stop controls.

Maximum and minimum depth of field.  Two images.  Works best when the only difference between the two images is ONLY the change in F-stops and shutter speeds.

Assignment: Selfies

Assignment: SELF-PORTRAIT/LIGHT/FEELINGS-EMOTIONS

Assignment: Selfies

DEADLINE:  Friday Feb. 21, 2014.  All images with caption/labels posted to your blog.

In this assignment can be done between one and three images.

The Self-Portrait, can not only be photos taken by yourself or directing the camera operator but observational details of yourself; reflections and shadows we create can communicate who we are inside as well as outside.

using Light in a dramatic manner, with composition and content to convey Feeling/Emotion. you will demonstrate your ability to successfully create an image that gives the impression of feelings and emotions. What elements  of the human experience and the physical appearance can communicate human emotion such as love, hate, confusion, determination’ happiness, sorrow, sadness, beauty, fear and hope.

Thoughtful consideration could create an image that fulfills the requirements of being a self-portrait, has a dramatic use of light; and convey the human condition, captures an expression of human emotion  and or evokes an emotional response in the viewer.

Images and captions should be labeled as self-portrait; discuss the quality or aspect of light; the intended emotion and or feeling.

Remember that the intent of the photograph is to give a sense of feeling or moods.  These moods are, of course, interpretive, and will only be understood within the context of your image. If it isn't in the image, it won't be seen by a viewer of that image.

This is also an exercise in using the title and the caption to work in companionship with the image.  Title and text are most effective in helping the viewer appreciate what they are seeing in the image.

Create an blog post titled: Selfies.

Trying to seeeveryone's posts and blogs.

Having a time seeing everyone's blog and exam answers.  I have only 26 adds to my blog.  I was expecting about 60 posts.  Working on a plan B to see everyone's exam answers.

If you have not created a blog and posted your answers by today, I will follow up next class and sort out why.
